The Nintendo Wii will cost $150 from May 15th, but we are waiting for the official announcement. The timing would make some sense, Nintendos profits have tanked for a while due flagging hardware sales, and just a month Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils Aime hinted that the Wiis price might be potential variable to change that in an interview with Gamasutra. Still, we are not fully convinced that Nintendo would announce a price cut then, we can confirm it on the Electronics Entertainment Expo in June, and not the company to let this sort of announcement leak out, but if you find a shiny new copy of Mario Kart Wii in a $150 console bundle this time next month, we will be happy that we told the price already.

AMD has another refresh to its graphics card portfolio this spring. Radeon HD 6970 is the new one, the card will be with more specifications, and the new mid-tier card will be retail at $149. The performance offers no threat to AMDs single-GPU flagship, but the 6970s 840MHz graphics and shader clocks speed plus 1 GB of GDDR5 running at an effective 4.2 GHz data rate dont seem like anything to sniff at either. Reviewers agreed that its AMDs slightly delayed answer to NVIDIAs GTX 460, and with latter card existing retail availability to make room for the less powerful GTX 550 Ti, the 800 stream processors and 16 ROPs does expose the HD6970 to being cannibalized by AMD s own Radeon HD 6850 and that turns out to be exactly what happens.

Microsofts direct X has been a main stay of mainstream PC gaming since the inception. Its existence hasnt been without its tension. The notable graphics guru John Carmack of id software ignoring it in a favour of Open GL until last week finally he acknowledged the Direct3D has out grown its cross-platform alternative and was now the preferable API for PC game development. But plenty of game developers, Richard Huddy, Head of AMDs developers relation team dont want any API at all. The modern graphics cards can pretty much stomp any console hardware into the dirt in a straight fight and yet fail to show the full extent of their superiority in actual game visuals. He had prefer to see the developers given direct low-level access to the hardware, so they can improve their talents and really push things forward. The beauty of Direct X is that its a standard that every Windows games designer can code to, leading to predictable and more compatible results.
