Good Bye Nexus 5

A Google spokesperson told TechRadar that production of the Nexus 5 smartphone has officially come to an end, warning prospective buyers that “once they are gone, they’re gone, so we’d suggest people get them while they can”.

The low-key announcement came around just as Google pulled the plug on the smartphone’s red and white versions, leaving only the black one for sale. Pretty soon, the super-sized Nexus 6 will be the only Nexus smartphone you can buy new.

Although it took a few months before Google solved its battery life and camera performance hurdles, the Nexus 5 was, and still is, an Android beast. Made by LG, powered by the aging, but outstanding Snapdragon 800 processor and 2GB RAM, the Nexus 5 and its 1080p 5-inch display were a dream for everyone who wanted the best specs and the raw Android 4.4 KitKat experience at a killer price.

We hate to see this one go, but the Nexus 5 lived a long and fulfilling life. Now, the time for it to ascend to the Heavens in the form of a glowing ethereal deer to the tune of sobbing Android enthusiasts has come.

UPDATE: Later, Google told The Verge that “Nexus 5 will continue to be available for sale on Google Play and through select retailers in Q1 2015.” Thus, it appears reports of the Nexus 5’s death are true, yet a bit exaggerated.
