HTC Teases A September 6 Event. May Reveal A “Hero Product”
HTC posted an image on its official Weibo account, which shows the shining outline of an electrifying, or electrocuted, smartphone. The image is also an invite about a press event to be held on September 6, 2015. HTC CEO, Cher Wang promised last June that a new “hero product” will be coming this year, and it may very well be announced on September 6.
What is interesting or disturbing (depends on how you see it) is that there is no information or leak or rumor about this upcoming smartphone. Either the company has perfected the art of preventing leaks or the Internet has shown a general disinterest in the matter.
It is hard not to be curious about this development, or the lack of it. HTC has been one of the oldest names in the smartphone market, predating either iOS, Android, or smartphones for that matter. In fact, it could be credited to have made the first Android smartphone, the HTC Dream, and the first Nexus device, the Nexus One. Therefore, it is somewhat disheartening to see the company going through extremely troubled times.
HTC has been losing market share for some time and their products are not as popular as it used to be. HTC released One M9 this year, which received almost universal criticism about the design and hardware. HTC promised they would release a new hero smartphone to fix the issues of One M9 and to pass new blood to their falling smartphone sales.
As for this mysterious Hero product, there is not much to talk about it at all. Since Snapdragon 820 is not due until 2016, the device has to use the controversial Snapdragon 810 or have to use Snapdragon 808 as LG did. HTC already said that they would be doing incremental changes to the design of their smartphones to create a signature design.
