Today, Cyanogen has announced through a top executive that they are planning to an office in India within the next three months and plans to acquire startups. The goal with the office is to bring together a team dedicated to working on India-specific assignments, given that the country has become a hotbed for smartphone growth over the past few years.

ET Tech interviewed Vikram Natarajan, senior vice-president of global partnerships and distribution at Cyanogen in which he revealed his company’s plan for India.

India is very attractive. It is one of the hyper-growth markets for mobile today.

Premji Invest is a big investor…and that was a deliberate decision, as India a big market for us.

What we strongly believe that global giants don’t is that any country with a large population will have the rise of a local ecosystem. We’re going to start seeing that in India.

– Vikram Natarajan

Cyanogen is planning to set their office in either Bengaluru or Delhi and will work on products, bring in local flavors to the operating system, along with doing testing and quality assurance.
This move is not a surprise considering, CyanogenMod recently received $80 million funding round, led by India-based Premji Invest. This move makes India a large part of Cyanogen’s planning and focus for the near and distant future.
